Album Analysis Florence and the Machine - Dog days are over single

This is one of the single covers for Flo’s first album. Along with the other covers this helps to create an identity for her to work with in the media. The cover is colourful and bold. A lot is going on in such a small area that you find it hard to choose a place to start to examine first. This is a good technique for an album cover because it means that people who may be browsing in online or in a shop will be attracted to the distinct and flamboyant style. The cover for me is very appealing because it incorporates both drawings and photography in a way that the images can ‘interact’ with each other.  A small hint of ‘Watership Down ‘is evident in the style of drawings that are used for the rabbit and woodland wildlife images. The image of Flo is one that doesn’t seem to be massively altered on a computer as such this creates an emotional affinity with the star because she looks so normal and simple, unlike many other char topping musicians. The colour scheme ranges from warm red tones to cool blues in the banners and illustrations. This contrast in colours works very well with the busy atmosphere of the cover. Furthermore, the circled edge of the cover adds to a feel of the 70’s where curved edges, soft tones and merged hues express a laidback and natural essence. Florence Welch has often been associated with the likes of Kate Bush, and in this cover it is clear to see why she can remind you of the bohemian Kate Bush. This cover in some ways illustrates the notion of looking at an artist through the framing of Florence; however the business of the rest of the image can often draw your attention away from her picture. Comparing this cover with other things such as performances, music videos and interviews the cover is consistent with her persona.
